You can get the essential codec from mplayer :

If it doesnt work please post your distro &version , what player you use & what type of file you are trying to play

what codecs are you looking for?


-For common Video codecs:
Use VLC, so you don't need to install anything else.... it opens almost every video and audio files..

-For Audio:
use xmms2, it has a lot of extra package... (codecs, lossless, addons...)
or
use AmaroK, it is simple to use...
